Praat is a curious application that will let you record sounds or import them if you have already recorded them, and analyse them exhaustively. Spectral, tone, intensity and formant analysis are the four fundamental tests you can perform. Once finished, of course, you'll be able to manipulate audio tracks and modify them as you like. Praat allows you to divide up the sound signal into temporal stretches or intervals, and to assign text or labels to these intervals. It does this by means of what it calls a TextGrid.
